Blue bioeconomy
The blue bioeconomy is an emerging field with significant potential in the transition to a sustainable society. At Chalmers Industriteknik, we conduct research and innovation to develop circular and resource-efficient solutions in blue food and materials, and to strengthen the competitiveness of industry.

From blue resources to a green shift
Blue bioeconomy is about harnessing renewable resources from marine and freshwater environments in a sustainable way. It includes everything from fishing and aquaculture to the cultivation of algae and seaweed to produce food, feed, bio-based materials, and energy.
The interest in this field is growing rapidly – especially since ocean farming requires no land, irrigation, or fertilizers. At the same time, there are challenges to navigate such as environmental risks, unclear regulations, limited knowledge, and a need for new forms of collaboration.
At Chalmers Industriteknik, we work with research and innovation to develop circular and efficient solutions within the blue bioeconomy.
Our focus areas include:
- Sustainable food and feed
- Resource efficiency and traceability
- Health and nutrition
- Valorization of residual streams into valuable materials and products
Together with companies, academia, municipalities, and other stakeholders, we are driving the transition toward a circular and competitive blue economy.
