Södra is Sweden’s largest forest owners’ association. Their sustainability goal is to increase growth on members’ properties by 20% from 2015 to 2050. This can be achieved, among other things, if the quality of land preparation and planting can be improved.
The aim of the project is to develop and test a prototype machine for land preparation and planting, and to describe a business case including manufacturing, ownership, rights, sales structure, and service. The autonomous machine will be able to be used on 75% of the members’ productive forest land. In a large consortium the Applied AI team is responsible for creating the terrain model from available data sources and the route planning which presents an advanced optimization challenge.
