IETS-Task XI – Industry-based Biorefineries towards Sustainability

Circular Economy
Energy
IETS Task XI takes a multi-disciplinary approach to the concept of biorefineries integrated in industrial complexes, with the aim of optimizing energy efficiency on a global scale. The work is driven by industry needs and practical applications, combining expertise in industrial technologies with energy efficiency measures and biomass conversion processes.

Launched in 2008, Task XI has been developed with the objective of sharing knowledge and experiences, as well as conducting research assessments and R&D projects to advance the concept of industry-based biorefineries. To date, activities have focused on strengthening international cooperation, building partnerships that improve energy efficiency in both existing and new integrated industrial plants. Work has also addressed sustainability assessments, decision-making approaches, biofuels and biomaterials production technologies, and yields from thermo-chemical and biological conversion of biomass and waste materials.

Within the framework of IETS Task XI, Chalmers Industriteknik has been commissioned to establish a Swedish consortium and collaboration platform for knowledge exchange. The consortium brings together representatives from academia, research institutes, and industry, and is linked to an international network within the International Energy Agency (IEA) with participants from Canada and Europe.

Work in Sweden has now begun, and the latest advances in industry-based biorefineries and sustainability aspects will be addressed in a series of workshops and seminars during 2025. Special focus areas include decision support systems, technology and process pathways, business models, and circular bioeconomy considerations. Chalmers Industriteknik will also participate in the Task XI steering committee and lead a dedicated sub-task.

The project is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.
