Flue Gas to Methanol- Electrocatalytic Technology for Integrating CO2 into the Circular Economy

Circular Economy
Innovation Management
Chalmers Industriteknik is helping to scale up a groundbreaking technology that converts industrial flue gas into e-methanol — a sustainable fuel and raw material.

Capturing and recycling carbon dioxide (CCU) from industrial emissions is key to achieving climate goals and building a sustainable future. In this Vinnova-funded project led by CarbGen, the technology will be developed from lab scale to industrial readiness. If successful, it could cut CO₂ emissions, boost resource efficiency, and strengthen Sweden’s position as a leader in sustainable technology, supporting both the EU Green Deal and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The role of Chalmers Industriteknik is to assess the commercial, environmental, and regulatory readiness of CarbGen’s CO₂-to-e-methanol process. We are evaluating pilot data, comparing commercialization pathways, analysing greenhouse gas reductions and energy efficiency, and mapping the e-methanol market including value chains, price trends, and policy alignment.

The project is funded by Vinnova and brings together industrial partners Essity, Perstorp, and Copper Lavender, and the research institute RISE.
