Trusted Research Environment for Health AI (TRE4HealthAI)

TRE4HealthAI is a system demonstrator for secure health data management and AI development. It faciliates ethically sound, regulation-compliant health data innovation and research, and fosters collaboration between industry, healthcare, and academia.
TRE4HealthAI promotes ethical AI development by investigating and demonstrating an environment that enables research and innovation that is technically robust, ethically sound, and compliant with applicable regulations. The project aims to facilitate secondary use of health data for AI innovation, in accordance with GDPR, the AI Act, European Health Data Space (EHDS).
The system takes the form of a multi-partner Trusted Research Environment (TRE), where cross-sector collaboration creates conditions for innovation that can improve healthcare. The project benchmarks comparable solutions and evaluates how such an environment can operate within Sweden’s legal, technical, ethical, and structural conditions. A system demonstrator will be developed to show how this approach can be designed and further developed. Pilot testing in real healthcare settings will assess the demonstrator’s effectiveness and reliability.
A key goal of the project is to enable collaboration between healthcare, academia, and industry, reflected in the consortium in which all sectors are represented. The project also prepares for long-term scalability and explores commercialization opportunities, with the ambition to support sustainable and secure AI innovation both nationally and across Europe.
The project is coordinated by Chalmers Industriteknik and is carried out in collaboration with the following project partners: AI Sweden, AstraZeneca, University of Gothenburg, Industry Commons Foundation, Karolinska Institutet, Mölnlycke Health Care, Region Halland, RISE, SciLifeLab, SynData, Vectura, Västra Götalandsregionen.
The project is funded by Vinnova.
