Cellulose-based materials
The project “BIOFACE: Bio-based façade materials in a circular economy” aims to develop new, sustainable material solutions for façade elements in buildings based on a circular economy.

The materials will be based on non-toxic and preferably renewable raw materials and the challenge will be to optimise the materials for durability and low maintenance over a long period of time, meet all regulatory requirements and have minimal environmental impact. This is combined with the fulfilment of requirements and expectations for recycling and reuse.

The project consists of parties from the entire value chain (PaperShell, Nouryon, Brixly, Olsson Lyckefors Arkitektur, Stena Recycling) and a collaboration between industry and research institutes (RISE, Chalmers Industriteknik), where the combined expertise will provide good opportunities to make decisions based on solid research results and the possibility of rapid industrialisation. The work includes needs, sustainability and market analysis, material development and verification, and dissemination of project results.

The project runs from May 2023 to July 2025 and is coordinated by Chalmers Industriteknik.
