Area Analysis of Biogenic Carbon Flow in Agriculture

Chalmers Industriteknik mapped biogenic carbon flows in Swedish agriculture to identify opportunities for improved resource efficiency and new uses of biomass. The analysis provides a foundation for future efforts toward sustainable agriculture.
As part of BioInnovation’s initiative to increase knowledge on biogenic carbon flows, Chalmers Industriteknik conducted an area analysis focusing on agriculture. The study was carried out from April to November 2024 and mapped biogenic carbon flows in Sweden’s agricultural value chains – from harvest to products, waste, and unused residue streams (including CO2). The analysis highlighted existing data and knowledge gaps and identified key challenges and opportunities. It also proposes strategic measures to enhance the sustainability of value chains connected to biogenic carbon flows. The results provide a basis for continued research, development, and policy efforts toward a more sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural sector.
