REMANENCE – Recycling of rare earth elements from permanent magnets in electronic waste

The future’s potentially limited access to rare earth elements has been debated a great deal over the last years. In order to address this challenge an international consortium has been assembled and given the task of developing new solutions for recycling.

REMANENCE is an ambitious project that aims to increase the amount of rare earth elements recycled from waste flows throughout Europe. In the project, which is financed by EU’s seventh framework program, industry and academia are collaborating to develop innovative technology, business models and market information which is necessary to take advantage of the valuable and rare earth elements, and to decrease the dependency of primary raw materials.
